The Continued Great Paint Out

We had much better weather for the second segment of the Great Paint Out. Everyone was in high spirits and we even had a professional photographer walk by! Altogether there were 18 painters participating in the 7th Great Paint Out. Good Show everyone!!!! There were eight of us dedicated stalwart souls last Wednesday at the Great American Oil Painters of America Paint Out. At 8 a.m. the day started out overcast, then became drizzly. Then about 10 ish the heavens opened up. so we decided to continue it next week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Some folks came from pretty far away.......Canada and Massachusetts. We shall send in two photos to OPA to show the two segments of our Great Paint Out.

The 7th Annual Great Paint Out sponsored by the Oil Painters of America will be on Wednesday September 7 from 8:30am to 3:00pm (or stay as long as you want). Just think painters from all over the United States will be doing the same thing at their own venues. We will be participating in this event. We will be painting at Grimes Cove in East Boothbay.

Directions:
For those of you coming from afar: From Route 1 take Route 27 south for about 10 or more miles, take a left at Hannafords (supermarket) (traffic lights). This is now Route 96. Go about six miles to the very end of that road. At the end of the road you will arrive at Grimes Cove (there is a parking lot on the left just before Grimes Cove).
There are rocks and waves and Ram Island with it's lighthouse and Fisherman's Island. Maybe a lobster boat will go by. Such a great place to paint.

Bring your lunch if you plan to stay till 3 o'clock

Both the General Store and Lobsterman's Wharf have good sandwiches.
Come and paint with your fellow painters.

"Painting Maine by the Roadside"

"Painting Maine by the Roadside," an exhibit of paintings by Dianne Horton and Sandy Dolan, is on display all month in the Kramer Gallery of the Belfast Free Library, 106 High St. The public is invited to an opening reception for the show Friday, Aug. 12 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10.
Dianne and Sandy have been painting all over Maine whenever the scene beckons them. Those road trips are often adventures in themselves bringing them much enjoyment and many laughs. They often have struggled with winds, rain and flying bugs, but these two seasoned artists love the adventure and scour for scenes to paint.
Sandy paints in oils and her work is often finished on site or in her home studio in Searsport. Dianne paints her watercolors on site, trying to paint quickly because of the changing shadows and the weather;
sometimes she finishes her work in her home studio in Swanville.

BILL TOMSA STRIKES AGAIN!

Bill recently submitted and had two of his paintings juried into the 2011 Maine Juried Art Show (MOJAS). He is pleased to say his plein air painting titled "Morning Joe" was awarded first place in the Acrylics Division. According to the Waterville Main Street web site http://www.watervillemainstreet.org , "The purpose of the show is to promote art awareness and to provide an art competition in Central Maine. This year’s show drew registrations from 87 artists from 55 towns, with a total of 161 paintings entered. The judges chose 131 original paintings for exhibition and awarded 31 prizes totaling $3510.00".

This has been a nice start to Bill's year, his painting, "A House in Maine" won the first place award in oils/acrylics at the Topsham Library's 3rd annual Joy of Art exhibit.

Gallery5 in Lewiston current exhibit "The Art of Abstract" runs through March 19th and is well worth a visit. You will find PAPME members represented here including Stephanie Berry, Robert Gibson, and Bill Tomsa.

Also while you're in town, try to check out the Biennial Exhibit of Area Artists at the Atrium Gallery (USM campus in Lewiston and also runs through March 19th) you will find a large and varied exhibit which includes paintings in many mediums, sculpture, ceramic, fabric, and more - all created by artists in our area. There are several PAPME members represented in the exhibit including: Stephenie Berry, Anastasia Gatto, Robert Gibson, Garrick Grant, Scott Hunter, Mary Isham, Ian Orman, Patricia Powers, Michael Ranucci, and Lawrence Stevens.

And the upcoming exhibit (March 25 to June 4) at Gallery5 "Frozen in Time", also promises to be an excellent exhibit and includes many PAPME members as well with: Elizabeth Coburn, Robert Gibson, Scott Hunter, Mary Isham, Melanie Ness, Ian Orman, Patricia Powers, Michael Ranucci, Lawrence Stevens, and Bill Tomsa.

Bill was awarded first place in the Oil/Acrylics category with his acrylic painting titled "A House in Maine" at the 3rd Annual Joy of Art exhibit at the Topsham Public Library 25 Foreside Road, Topsham, ME. GAIL MORRISON'S oil painting, LA VIE ET LE MORT, has been accepted into the BLOSSOMS ll - ART OF FLOWERS show which opens at the NAPLES ART MUSEUM in Florida on February 1, 2011.

The Show Stats are quite impressive: 2053 enties from 970 artists in 14 countries. Fewer than 100 paintings were juried into the show by a panel of 7 judges. A smaller number of paintings will be juried from the Naples Museum Show and will begin a year-long traveling exhibition after April 15th.

Renee Lammers painting, "The Great Meadow" was chosen by Jackson Laboratory on Mount Desert Island for their national and international advertising for the year of 2011. They choose one artist each year. They will produce 6,000 posters of the image and they are publishing an ad with the image in many magazines around the world.

Sidewalk Umbellas

Bill has been busy painting for the annual Arts Downtown & All Around (ADAA) event put on by the Five River Arts Alliance (FRAA) in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath and surrounding areas. It is a three day event for local artists with open studios, gallery exhibits and group shows in Brunswick and several other towns. For the 6th year in a row Bill is with the Group Show at Ft. Andross in Brunswick on Dec. 3rd, 4th and 5th. Friday is from 5-8pm, Saturday is 10am-5pm and Sunday is 12noon - 4pm. Most of Bill's work will be landscapes, coastal and street scenes of areas in and around midcoast. Here are a couple of Bill's paintings that will be in the show.

RICK DICKINSON at Bowdoin

Rick's paintings are on view for the month of November at Bowdoin College’s Blue Gallery in the David Saul Smith Union Building. The show is called "The Colors Of the Landscape" Rick paints in an impressionist style developed by Henry Hensche and Lois Griffel of the Cape Cod School in Provincetown, MA. Rick says, “Let me splash down spots of color, depicting the atmosphere, the light, the impression of the moment as best as my talent allows, without concern of where the painting will take me or where the journey will end.”

A Great Place to Paint

PAPME members were lucky enough to paint at the Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson. They were welcomed by Gary Hayward who showed us some wonderful places to paint.
There are 800 acres and 25 miles of trails throughout the Center. Several ponds, streams, a waterfall, granite ledges and a meadow provide great subject matter.
For those of you who like winter painting, you might want to make a visit there for some wonderful scenery following a snowfall. Check out their web site, http://www.hvnc.org for information.

At least eighteen PAPME members (see below) were accepted into ArtinME , the State-Wide Juried Art Exhibiton. The Jurors were Philip Isaacson, Art Critic and Writer for the Maine Sunday Telegram and Dennis Gleason of Gleason Galleries in Portland and Boothbay Harbor. The exhibition will run from October 15 - November 16 at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation in Boothbay Harbor.

We had a variety of weather all in one day. A challenge to a painter. It started out ominously with rain. But then the rain ended just as we started to paint. It became cloudy. Then the sun came out and it was warm and beautiful pretty much the rest of the day. Then it got cloudy again and the wind picked up and the waves began to crash against the shore.
There were fourteen of us. One painter, Bruce Newman, came all the way from New Brunswick Canada to paint with us. A lot of the other painters came from quite a distance in Maine also. The comraderie and exchange of ideas was priceless

PAPME "Paint The Town" Exhibit at Studio 53

Twenty-three of us PAPME members have thirty-nine of our paintings hanging at Studio 53 Fine Art, 53 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor. It looks terrific! We all painted all around Boothbay Harbor for two Wednesday's in a row.
The show will run until August 30..... An artist reception will be held on August 20 from 7-9.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 12 -5 and Sundays from 10-2.

PAPME Monhegan Trip

A painting trip is planned for Monhegan Island arrival on the morning boat September 14th with a departure on Friday, September 17th by afternoon boat.

There are ferry schedules from Boothbay (Balmy Day Cruises), New Harbor (Hardy Boat Cruises) and Port Clyde (Monhegan Boat Line). Plans were to arrive by morning boat on the 14th so could paint a half day on the 14th, with two full painting days on Wed. and Thurs. with an afternoon departure on the 17th so we could paint that morning.

Suggested lodging was the Monhegan House (www.monheganhouse.com 207-594-7983) which has a few single rooms left for those dates and the Trailing Yew (www.trailingyew.com 207-596-0440) which has single rooms available. Did not inquire at either place about doubles. There are other places on the island, but these two offered the least expensive rates.

This is not a structured outing, thought it would be fun to have other painters to paint with and maybe some critiques in the late afternoon and shared dining. The Yew includes both breakfast and dinner in their rates and the Monhegan House includes breakfast with a dining room available at night. There aren't a lot of restaurants available, so it made sense to pick a place that has food!

If you have an interest, suggest you contact a hotel on the island and make your reservation and your boat reservation as well. Please let me know if you will be coming so I can have an idea of the size of the group and we can make plans as to where we'd like to paint with good suggestions as to options so we have company when we paint at the different locations. The Second Annual Plein Air Painters of Maine Show this year will be held August 4th through the 11th at the Allen David Gallery with the reception on the First Friday evening, August 6th. They have booked the same band as last year, Smoldering Ruins, whose cd will be available for sale. Refreshments will be served. It will be advertised in the Boothbay Register and sent out to up to 400 emails. Last year they had over 270 people come to the show and over 1000 during the week. They invite you to send out an invitation to your email lists. They are asking you to pay $15 per entree and limit your paintings to two. All work should have been done en plein air. Please plan on bringing your work on Monday or Tuesday, August 2nd or 3rd and plan on picking them up on Wednesday or Thursday, the 11th or 12th.

Stapleton Kearns Demonstration

We were fortunate enough to watch a demonstration by Stapleton Kearns yesterday at Grimes Cove, Ocean Point, East Boothbay. He has a wealth of knowledge and shares it generously. There were 17 of us gathered around, barraging him with questions which he gladly answered. Now it is up to us to apply what we learned and paint the best paintings we are capable of.

Opportunities offered to plein air painters

PAPME was begun three years ago in Boothbay and has since grown to well over 100 members. Every year, an outdoor painting session is held with an end-of-day exhibit. PAPME is also the host organization for Oil Painters of America'a "Great Paint-out" held in August.

Additionally, Gallery 5 in Lewiston will host an open exhibit of plein air works from Oct. 15 to Nov. 6 in collaboration with LA Arts and PAPME.

The western chapter is a way for local artists to get outdoors and paint with other area artists. Twice per month sessions are scheduled to take place in and around the Lewiston-Auburn area as well as in the mountains and along the coast. The first scheduled session for the western chapter is Saturday, May 8.

Area artists interested in plein air painting are encouraged to join the chapter. For more information about locations and dates, or to become a member, contact the PAPME Western Chapter liaison Michael Ranucci at mjranucci@roadrunner.com.

Western and Northern Chapters Update

After working during the winter for this goal, the Western and Northern Chapters, are meeting this week for the first time.
Monday, Renee Lammers led the Northern Chapter to Port Clyde.
This coming, Saturday, May 5th. Michael Ranucci will have the Western Chapter at Ian Orman's farm in Leeds.. Michael says, "I think this will be a great place to kick off our chapter. I hope you have your bristles and palettes ready."

Now we all have more places and dates to paint together! This should be a very active and productive season for all of us!

BILL TOMSA GETS AWARD FROM MOJAS

Bill had two paintings (The Road Home and Journey #4) juried into the 20th Annual Maine Open Juried Art Show (MOJAS) in Waterville, Maine. Journey #4 was awarded a third place ribbon and cash prize.
The Waterville Art Society held its first Maine Open Juried Art Show in 1990. The purpose of the show is to promote art awareness and to provide an art competition in Central Maine. This year’s show drew registrations from 95 artists from 61 towns, with a total of 177 paintings entered. The judges chose 99 original paintings for exhibition and awarded prizes totaling $3,650.00.”

Bill works in both representational and non-representational styles, but regardless of the style he s working in he says “My goal is to bring joy and inspiration to my audience through my art.” Many of Tomsa’s acrylic paintings depict scenes in the Topsham, Brunswick and surrounding areas and are collected nationally and internationally.

A Break in the Weather

Congratulations to Lee Boynton who recently received the second place award for his painting "Market Street Adirondacks" from the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association (MAPAPA). Lee painted in their annual "Paint Annapolis" plein air event. His painting, completed during the event's three days, was featured in a show at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

Forty artists applied for this award that is given to an emerging Maine artist each summer. Daniel has just returned from his sojourn on Monhegan with the superb collection of work, a portion of which is now showing at Camden Falls Gallery. Daniel is a traditional painter rooted in the aesthetic values of the Ashcan school and the impressionists of the Cape Cod School of Art. Inspired by light quality, color harmony and abstract shapes, his paintings are created from direct observation. Enjoying the challenge of painting nontraditional views and subjects, he finds the beauty in them, along with what he interprets as, “what makes Maine, Maine.”

The "Plein Air Painters of Maine" is Growing

What started out with only four of us has grown to over 100 people. So we have decided to have a PAPME Northern Chapter. Maine is such a large state we need to accommodate all painters. This seems the best solution. Renee Lammers of Bucksport will be the liaison person for the new Chapter.

Monique and Ron Parry will be participating in the Rockport (MA) Art Association Special Holiday Exhibit "Masterpieces In Miniature" which runs from November 20 through December 31, 2009. Each exhibitor will hang four identically framed 6x8 paintings. Each artist's work will be hung in a grouping to showcase the work to its best advantage. On a beautiful day at the beginning of this month a few PAPME members took the ferry to Vinalhaven to paint. The ferry ride gave them some great images for future paintings. They visted the Downtown and the Lobster Docks. A wonderful day was had by all. They are anxious to return again soon.

Wow! There were about twenty-five members of THE PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF MAINE (PAPME) gathered to paint for the day at Ocean Point, the site of THE GREAT PAINT OUT sponsored by the Oil Painters of America. All across the United States other plein Air painters from each state were doing the same. Painters came from Auburn, Lewiston, Turner, Waldo, Rockland, Georgtown, Fairfield, Farmingdale and Bremen. Some painters came early and left mid-day and some of you stayed until 3 o'clock. Good Turnout. The comraderie and sharing of ideas is what brings us all together. There were some really good paintings going on and Gail Morrison sold hers right off the easel!

A Very Dedicated and Happy Group!

We have had 12 to 14 people every week since our Maine weather broke. We have painted by the sea, on the rocks, and at a Sea Pier where lobster boats and lobster crates abound; at a farm amidst chickens, geese and sheep; at a Railway Village where a vintage depot, caboose, and buildings were fodder for our brushes.
This week we are going to an estate by the sea where there are "bunny barracks" and grounds kept by two gardeners . Great painting subjects for marine, floral or animal artists.

Dolly has been busy this winter painting for a group show called "Nude Night" in Tampa, Fla. and she is in another group show in June in California. This theme is horses.
That is a nice variety of subjects.
