ABOUT US

A few years ago four professional plein-air painters from the Boothbay region were at an opening. (Corinne McIntyre, Roger Milinowski and Ron and Monique Parry). Ron said, "Since we all usually paint by ourselves why don't we go out every Wednesday and paint together". And so the "Plein Air Painters of Maine" was born. What started out with just four of us now has ten Chapters with over 600 members. At any given time in the summer there can be 14 to 20 people painting. In the winter there may only be two or three hearty folk. But the interest has never subsided. The comraderie, exchange of ideas and just plain fellowship with other painters is so rewarding.

The Boothbay Region, in fact, all of Maine, has a wealth of subject matter to paint. The sea, the coastal rocks, endless skies, seabirds, lobster boats, docks, fish houses...etc. It is so beautiful. A painters paradise.

PAPME MEMBER PHILIP FREY TO HOLD WORKSHOP

Abstracting the Landscape / Islesford, Maine
Plein Air Painting with Philip Frey

August 31 - September 6, 2019

Islesford, also known as Little Cranberry, is a beautiful and charming island, accessible by boat off the coast of Mount Desert Island, Maine, that offers oceanside landscapes and a relaxed village life. With its active fishing pier, boat houses and beaches as our inspiration, artist Philip Frey will present pivotal lessons designed specifically to develop your creativity. Over time and through joyful effort, we can become a skilled painter, but our creativity can become stale and our images rote if we get stuck. So, to maintain our creativity, we need to look freshly and break down what we see into its fundamental, abstract elements. We will achieve this through lessons on color theory, the elements and principles of design, as well as one-on-one instruction and group critiques. Students will learn to open the doors to authenticity and grow as an artist. Be prepared to be challenged artistically, develop insights, and have fun while enjoying the unique Maine coast.

About the Instructor

Philip Frey is a celebrated career artist and instructor with a newly published book, Philip Frey: Here and Now, by Daniel Kany and Carl Little. He will be having solo exhibitions at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art and George Marshall Store Gallery in 2019. Philip is known for his engaging, illuminating and positive teaching style. He is skilled at addressing his student’s abilities and helping them mature as an artist.

“I have taken several of your workshops and initially thought that they would be redundant but I was wrong. Your different approaches to plein air, figure drawing and still life kept each fresh and challenging. I enjoyed each one and learned new concepts as well as reviewing old ones.” - M. Beaulieu of Bernard, Maine. Read more testimonials here.
